Climate Poetry in Wooly Motion

In what organizers call “a creative process akin to poetry magnets, but with a wooly twist,” the ��˽��̳�� Davis Sheepmowers team is joining forces with the Big Shift campus construction project to create “Sheep Shift Climate Poetry” on April 24 to 26.

Campus and community members are invited to submit climate-change inspired words today through April 21.

The University of California, Davis, honored The Egghead Series of sculptures and by extension its arts heritage in special events today marking the 30th anniversary year of the last Egghead installations on campus.

Record Number Apply for Undergraduate Studies at ��˽��̳�� Davis

A record high of 115,349 students applied to the University of California, Davis, for undergraduate studies in fall 2024.

The applications represented a 4.7% increase over the previous record of 110,189 applications for fall 2022 and 5.5% over last year’s 109,350. There was even higher growth in applications from groups historically underrepresented in higher education, as well as students seeking to transfer from California Community Colleges.

A series of five deaths in her extended family had devastated Jasmine Diaz, and the neurobiology, physiology and behavior major was on academic probation through 2022. She had given up her dream to become a doctor or even to continue in science.

Today, the fifth-year student is thrilled to be working in the cancer lab of Professor Luis Carvajal-Carmona, is recommitted to a career in science, and has a passion to help underrepresented and first-generation students.

Survey: Davis Apartment Vacancy Rate Improves Substantially

Spurred by the construction of hundreds of new apartment units on the ��˽��̳�� Davis campus, the apartment vacancy rate in the city of Davis has increased substantially, while monthly rents have increased more modestly.

A survey report released today (Feb. 1) shows a 3.0% blended vacancy rate — including apartments leased by the unit and by the bed — which is significantly higher than the 0.5% rate for fall 2022. Rents increased by a combined average of 1.8%.
